Educating illegal immigrants is a controversial issue with heavy opposition but surprisingly there are almost as many supporters. People seem to confuse illegal immigration with legal immigration. The United States has a federal law against in-state tuition benefits for illegal immigrants but some states have passed state laws, overriding the federal law, allowing illegal immigrants in-state tuition benefits. Pending legislation also exists that would allow illegal immigrants to gain legal residency after completing a degree. Both the existing and pending legislation providing illegal immigrants with higher education benefits are causing a major impact on adult education.
