• Content: Your essay must clearly demonstrate a conversancy and familiarity with the relevant course readings AND a critical understanding of their broader significance for the question at hand. Remember that your personal opinions must be compellingly supported by substantive arguments and strong evidence. It is impossible to do well on the essay without referring to the course readings; as such, you will need to use citations that include the author’s name and page number, e.g. (Bauman, 915). While the essay is not a research paper, you will need to support your arguments using outside scholarly/authoritative sources. Your essay must be logically organized around a clearly articulated thesis. Be interesting, creative, and engaging, and please don’t waste precious time and space belaboring the obvious (“crime is a serious problem in our society”).
• Format: Your essay must be typed DOUBLE SPACE in a standard 12-point font, with 1” margins (top, bottom, and sides!), and must be clearly written using standard English grammar and correct spelling. Your essay must be AT LEAST four (4) pages long, and CANNOT exceed five (5) pages. Feel free to write in the first person (“I”) if you wish. Citations and bibliography may be in any standard form of your choosing (APA, ASA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) Proofread, proofread, and proofread again! This is the easiest way to boost your grade. Your essay must be bound or stapled: NO folded corners or paper clips.
• Evaluation: 75 points maximum for content, 50 points maximum for style, grammar, spelling, and formatting, 25 points for quality, relevance, and suitable integration of outside sources.
