You are required to refer to at least 2 secondary materials from chapter 19. 2 of these must be the critical essays, these are: Gretchen Schulz and R.

Answer the essay prompt below. Remember to treat your answer as an in-class research essay. You are required to refer to at least 2 secondary materials from chapter 19. 2 of these must be the critical essays, these are: Gretchen Schulz and R.J.R Rockwood’s In Fairyland, without a Map ; and Mike Tierce and John Michael Crafton’ s Connie’s Tambourine Man. Optional additional secondary source/s that you refer to are up to you, as long as they are taken from chapter 19.Remember: you do not have to agree with the critics’ interpretations. In addition, feel free to include brief relevant references to the adaption Smooth Talk if you feel such a comparison is useful. Do not refer to Smooth Talk if it does not help your discussion. The main focus of your essay is Joyce Carol Oates’ Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?

Create a logically-structured, well-argued essay in which you provide evidence from Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? and the secondary materials contained in chapter 19. You do not have to include a Works Cited page, but you do need to include MLA in-text references.

The roles of men and women in the story; the way women are viewed in the story; is the world of the story a safe place for a women’s sexuality?; issues of freedom, confinement, and access to control; to what extent can the story be interpreted as having explicitly feminist concerns?; to what extent do fairy tale motifs impact issues of power; what do symbols such as the house and the cars suggest about power?; what role does music play?
