Write, in 1750 words, a research essay that argues for a plausible political reform. This essay differs from Essay 1 in that you are not arguing about a puzzle but rather making an argument about solving a political problem – of telling the reader how a realistic reform can be made and why it should be made.
Conditions:
Greater word length: You’ve an added 250 words to use in this essay compared to Essay 1. Use this space wisely!
Problem solving emphasis: This final essay is different to the puzzle-based essay where you revealed to the reader a new perspective about an ongoing issue. Here, in this essay, you are first pitching a real political problem, telling the reader why it’s a problem, and arguing about a realistic reform to that problem.
Greater research expectation: You are expected to use 12 references (each cited at least once in-text) in this essay as opposed to the 10 you cited in your first essay.
Note: Be sure to complete the tasks in Module 13 before attempting this final essay. Draw on the feedback you’ve received throughout this unit. Use this final essay as an opportunity to demonstrate to yourself, and the convenor, how you’ve improved your craft.

(1) Validity of your argument (25%)
Formula
Each invalid statement incurs a 20% penalty. At 5 penalties the mark is zero for this criterion. Each invalid statement will be listed in the box below. An invalid statement is one that is factually incorrect, unjustified (as in an unjustified claim or generalization), or logically unprovable.
(2) Structure of your argument (25%)
Formula
Each problem with the structure of your argument incurs a 20% penalty. At 5 penalties the mark is zero for this criterion. The criteria for structure are: introduction (is there one? is it complete?), conclusion (is there one? does it fulfil its function?), logic (is there an argument in this paper?), research integration (do you integrate high quality peer-reviewed research in the argument you’re making?), and paragraphing (are you correctly using paragraphs?). Each problem with structure will be listed in the box below.
(3) Research (25%)
Formula
Each error concerning in-text citation or the reference list (aside from stylistic issues which fall under criterion 4) will incur a 10% penalty. At 10 penalties the mark is zero for this criterion.
(4) Communication (25%)
Formula
Each error in communication (grammar, syntax, lucidity, etc) will incur a 4% penalty. At 25 errors the mark is zero for this criterion.
Total: 100/100.
