World War 2 – Mediterranean
Between December 1940 and May 1943, the Mediterranean was arguably Great Britain’s (and allies) main theatre of war.
Discuss military operations during the Second World War in the Mediterranean in relation to the Allied campaign. Explain why this theatre was so important to both the Allies and Axis. Examine how the technical advancement in aviation, naval and land operations contributed to new tactics (joint operations) and procedures and how these aided success for the allies.
Points to consider –
• Assess the degree to which sea, air and land operations contributed to the success or failure of those strategies.
• Explain the approach to ground operations taken by the Italian, British, German and American forces, with particular emphasis on the German ‘way of war’ and the means by which the Allies eventually overcame it.
