there are several inherited conditions that are linked to abnormal mitochondrial enzymes. Because of these defective enzymes, the mitochondria of people with these disorders are not able to generate ATP as efficiently as those of normal individuals.
Cells throughout the body may be affected but the most frequent symptoms involve muscle and nerve cells. Why would the muscle and nerve cells be affected more seriously than, for example, skin cells. (using knowledge of mitochondrial functions)
