Why alimony should be abolished

Alimony refers to the payments made for the purpose of supporting a spouse who is not earning as much as the supporting spouse. The spouse who is being supported is referred to as the dependent spouse. The dependent spouse can be the husband or the wife. It may be implemented as a lump sum or through a specified period of time. Sometimes it is compelled by a court of law. Most of the times, it depends with acts of sexual behavior outside of marriage. In the circumstances where the supporting spouse has been involved in such behaviors, the court usually issues alimony. Alimony comes with a lot of strain to the supporting spouse. In some circumstances, the dependent spouse ends up being better economically that the supporting spouse. In this case, the supporting spouse continues to provide to the dependent spouse as a requirement by the law. This paper aims at looking at the reasons why alimony should be abolished.

The first reason why alimony should be abolished revolves around the ownership of property in the house by the divorcing couple. When people come together in a marriage, they start a family, and they provide for the family together. Both the wife and the husband complement one another as equal members in the union. All the property they own belong to the two of them at a greater extent. When this couple divorces, the highest probability is that they will divide the property into equal halves. In the case where this happens, it is illogical to force one of the spouses to continue providing for the other after divorce. This is a torture to the supporting spouse. Such a decision appears to be biased. The case should be decided in a manner that promises a smooth life after divorce for the two people. The second reason why alimony should be abolished is because this law has been abused by the courts, and the opportunists. Many of the decisions that have been arrived at by the courts have favored the spouse who is earning less. It goes against the logical sense to assume that the partner who is earning less is always on the right. Some decisions made by the courts are pointing to the direction that the people who are earning more are always on the wrong. This is a baseless assumption that should not be allowed in an advanced society. This aspect is also coupled with the people who have taken a chance of the law to drain the sweat of other. This act has gained roots among the female gender. Cases have been found in the courts where women plot with other women to sue their husbands in order to benefit from alimony.

The other reason why alimony should not exist is because of the way people spend the money they get from alimony. In real life, people spend their money wisely because they worked hard for it. It has been realized that people who get free money through alimony spend the money extravagantly. This is very painful to the person who is working hard get the money. The dependent live expensive lifestyles because they engage in other activities to supplement the share they are getting from their supporters. At the same time, the supporters live very miserable lives trying to make ends meet. It has also been found that alimony encourages laziness. People just wait for the end of the month to receive money they have not worked for. This encourages laziness because whether they work or not, they will receive enough money at the end of the month.Another reason why alimony should not be practiced is the extent to which it is degrading the morals of the society. The moral fiber of the divorcees and particularly the childless women has been lost in their selfish interests. The proponents of the moral fabric in the society argue that alimony has a very bad precedence to the future generation, in regard to morals. A concern, for example, is among the women who are receiving massive support from their husbands, yet they are not bringing up any child. From a moral perspective point of view, this appears awkward.

In addition, the times have changed, and most women are in the workforce. When many women were not working, alimony made sense because it contributed to supporting them. In the present times, it looks out of the moral order to support a spouse who is earning every end of the month. The other point that goes with this is that when divorce comes, it affects the finances of both spouses. The two of them should contribute to the bringing up of children. It breaks logic to force one spouse to support the other, yet both of them have been affected. To consider it further, there is no guarantee that a marriage shall be a happy one when two people enter into it. Forcing one spouse to support the other when the marriage breaks, is like blaming the spouse for the failure of the marriage. Every spouse should be prepared for any turn of events since predicting the future is impossibility to both of them. In the contemporary society, alimony has always found men to be the victims. This makes them unable to continue with life after divorce. This is because they are supporting the children while, at the same time, the man is in support of a spouse who is working. On the other perspective, it is good to consider the life a spouse had during the marriage and the likely life in the event of divorce. For example, a woman who is not on a well-paying job may need to be supported may the husband so that shecontinues with such a life after divorce. In such a case, alimony is important, and the husband should be made to support her by law. Further, cases arise where the ex-wife is left to care for the children. In such a case, alimony is important in order to support the woman to bring up the children. A further consideration is where the spouse who is to be supported has no other source of income. It is very reasonable and advisable to extend support to such a spouse.

In conclusion, alimony should be abolished. The events that lead to alimony in most circumstances are not in line with the moral fabric of the society. Moral degradation in the society is dependent to a great deal on the people who are in a marriage. When people in a marriage contribute to degrade societal morals, the whole generation and the future generation is threatened. To safeguard the, moral, component values of the society, alimony should be abolished at whatever cost.
