(Dueck, p.5) defines language is the mode used for human communication. It can be either written or spoken, and it is often composed of words in a predictable or a structured way. Language is a human gift that is unique in every individual. Human nature can differ significantly according to the nature and culture of a person. (Forman, p.70) asserts that understanding the culture of an individual helps us to understand the genetic behind their language. Culture in most circumstances has been seen to affect the language of people especially when the language concerned is a second language. The thesis of this essay is that language does not affect the sense of self worth of authors.

To start with, we are going to base our arguments on the essay Mother Tongue by Amy Tan. Culture affects the language of people, as one is likely to follow the language that he or she was introduced to at an earlier stage (Benisz, p.60). For example if one has been brought up in certain culture, it will definitely affect how one pronounces some words in a second language. In this essay, the author says that her language was greatly affected by her mother’s upbringing. She clearly remembers an occasion when shewas giving speaking English that she was not herself was not used to and she remembers that her mother was in the room. The English that she used the conditional phrases and past perfect tenses burdenedher, as she was not used to. She also remembers that in another occasion she remembers switching to the English that she was used to communicate with her mother she also remember her husband joining in the conversation  without having to realize that the English she was using was limited English. Her husband was used to this type of English. This greatlyshows how culture affects the language.

In another essay the myth of a Latin woman by Judith Cofer, the author says that she was of a Spanish origin and was notconversant with the English language due to the fact that she was from the Rita Moreno Island whereby the culture affected the language of people as well as the way the people dressed. The author says that one can leave the Island master the English language and travel as far as theycan. This also supports thestatement that cultures the language of people as the author here implies that you cannot learn English in the same Island.

Failure to travel. This is another issue thathas greataffect onlanguage. Failure to travel makes the people not to learn a different language (Dueck, p.18). Forexample, the author in this novel recons that the first time she travelled outside California she was fifteen years old to New Yolk where she was accompanying her mother to meet a stockbroker who had failed to honour an agreement that he had entered with her mother.

The author of the essay Judith Coffer also believes that one has to learn English to be able to travel to another place. In another occasion, she asserts that when going to parties she did not have a model to look up to when it comes to fashion as she says that apart from Mano Thomas who she watches on television she has no other model that she can base her decision from. This shows how lack of travelling has affected her dressing as well as her language because it is evident that if she has travelled she would have a variety of models to choose from.

The other effect is perception. People have a different perception about people when it comes to language. Forexample, most people believe that Chinese people are not good in English while in most cases there are Chinese who are actually good English speakers and others are actuallyrenownedwriters(Forman, p.65). The author here says that she was a stubborn medicine Chinese student whowas discouraged that she cannot venture writing but she did it and has succeed immensely.

In addition, the author Judith Cofer tells us she has a Chicana friend who is on her PhD program major in philosophy and her doctor is amazed by the words that she uses. This clearly shows how perception has influenced language, as the doctor is amazed because he has the perception that since she is a Chicana she is only supposed to use simple words as opposed to those that she uses.

In conclusion, it is evident that culture, perception as well as the failure to travel can greatly affect the language of a person. However, the effects has not affected the authors not have instead they them strong as well as help them to improve in their writing skills. The author here says that despite the critics that her writing has faced, her mother abilities to read her works and understands makes her sure that her writing skills have grown. The author Brent Staples on the essay just by asserts that despite of him being viewed as a criminal and often pulled over by the police this has made his writingskills grow as the critics that he has faced has helped him improve in his writing. Due to the reasons that have been discussedabove, it is evident that language does not influence the self-worth of authors.
