What does friendship feel like?’ Paper details Assessed project: Qualitative project guidelines

If you choose to write up the qualitative project option, you will find the materials from weeks 8 and 9 particularly useful, but may find it useful to refer back to earlier sessions too (e.g. week 1 on the philosophical issues underpinning research).

Your project report should feature your analysis of one of the interview transcripts from the TQRMUL dataset (http://www.pnarchive.org/Webdocs_not_nof/tqrmul/dataset/). If you wish, you may attempt to analyse more than one interview, but it is not necessary to do so. Indeed, at this stage it may be more useful to undertake a detailed analysis of one interview than try to take on too much and doing it relatively superficially. You should use the ‘playscript’ version of the transcript for your analysis. Your research question is: ‘What does friendship feel like?’

As discussed in the lecture and practical sessions in week 9, you should use thematic analysis. You will need to go through the stages outlined by Howitt and Cramer (2011; see also Braun & Clarke, 2006).

You should write-up your report in the format outlined on the lecture slides in week 9. Please note that this is slightly different to the format outlined in the skills session in Week 4. There are important differences between the format of qualitative and statistical research reports.
