You will write an essay of at least two double-spaced pages (600 words). Be sure to indent the first line of each paragraph. In your essay, answer the following question:

How did religion affect Europe during the Middle Ages? What functions did religion serve? Be sure to consider political, social, cultural, and economic issues in your answer, as well as interactions between Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. (HINT: Ask yourself if religion unified people or divided them. Why did religion have this effect?)

There are one hundred possible points on Option 2. Your essay will be graded according to the following criteria:

• A clear thesis. Any thesis is acceptable, as long as you defend it logically with evidence from your course materials. You should support your thesis throughout your paper with accurate information and details. (20 points possible)

• Discussion of the political aspects of religion. (20 points possible)

• Discussion of the social, cultural, and economic aspects of religion. (20 points possible)

• Analysis of the “Great Schism.” (10 points possible)

• A summary of interactions between different faiths. (20 points possible)

• Use of essay format. Your paper should be well organized. Follow the introduction-body paragraphs-conclusion style. Your paper should read smoothly, and your word choice should reflect your ideas and beliefs. (5 points possible)

• Few, if any, errors in spelling, grammar, sentence structure, capitalization, and punctuation
