Visual Arts and Film Studies Academic Essay

1. Discuss/critique the television episodes shown in the lecture this week:
Dragnet and The Untouchables. How do you think these would fare with audiences today?
2. a. Briefly describe a television drama shown today that you watch regularly or one that you are familiar with. Discuss and describe how well you think that show fits the standard formula for a drama or crime-drama. Is it simply a new version of an “old” story or is it a show with a unique perspective and unique ideas?
b. How do you think that show reflects society, if at all?
3. Why, in your opinion, has the television crime-drama remained so popular with audiences through the years?
4. On McCarthyism and Murrow:
The results of the information provided in this week’s lecture, from a mass media perspective, is that Edward R. Murrow had huge influence over government (in a sense). His strong opinions lead to the fall of a U.S. Senator – not by reporting scandal, but by stating the Senator’s work was against our democracy. How do you feel about this in a general sense? Should the media or a particular media personality have that kind of power, and do you believe this is possible today?
5. Considering your perspective may have changed after watching the clips provided in the lecture, do you feel any journalist or news personality has the power of a Murrow today?
