Treatise Hume Academic Essay

In the Treatise, Hume argues that the uniformity principle — i.e. that “the course of nature continues always uniformly the same” (i.3.6, ¶4) — cannot be proved on the basis of a relation of ideas (demonstrative reasoning) or of a matter of fact (probable reasoning).
– First, explain Hume’s argument from i.3.6, making sure to explain what demonstrative reasoning is, and what probable reasoning is, and how these differ.
– Then, consider whether Hume’s argument, as you have described it, is itself based on a relation of ideas alone or on a matter of fact. Explain your answer.
