Research Paper
l Task Description
Students are required to write an individual research paper on a question related to a topic discussed
in the seminars. It is recommended that students either write a business advice paper or a case study,
or a mock newspaper article.
If students wish to work on a research question, approval from the coordinator is required by week 5.
With the coordinator’s prior approval, students can also
choose to write a group research paper within their presentation groups. The word limit is the
individual word limit multiplied by number of students. Approval is also required by week 5.

Students should take into account feedback provided for the individual proposal in formulating the
methodology and the final question for the research paper.
Some suggestions to how to approach different types of research papers:
• Business Case / Advice Paper: The best paper reflects a genuine case, where the business and
legal issues are clearly identified and analysed. A proposed solution is preferred.
• Mock Newspaper Article on a Chinese business law policy: The best paper identifies the policy
and its implications for businesses, and it is presented clearly for the audience – the general public.
• Research Paper: The best paper identifies a researchable question, it has a tight structure, and
the research is evidence based and correctly referenced e.g. journal articles, the law itself, if doing a
comparative piece, information from the other jurisdiction, etc.
