Essays are due at the beginning of lecture on Monday, May 2nd. The essay should be a
minimum of 5 full pages in length (no more than 7) in the Humanities format (see
Mechanics and Quotations handouts).* A counterargument is required.
Respond to one of the following prompts:
1. Nietzsche condemns the “modern man” of his age. According to Nietzsche this
modern man sighs, “I know not which way to turn; I am everything that knows not
which way to turn.” Describe how Eliot’s criticism of modernity is similar to
Nietzsche’s.
2. Analyze either Kafka or Eliot’s preoccupation with the strange and strained
relationship between body and self.
3. Compare how shame functions as a mechanism of control in two of the following:
Nietzsche, Kafka, and Eliot.
4. Compare the sources and effects of alienation in Marx and one of the following:
Nietzsche, Kafka, or Eliot.
Submit a paper copy of your essay to your TA in a plain manila folder with your name on it.
Include all your previous Humanities papers in the folder.
Before submitting a paper copy at lecture, you must submit an electronic copy to
www.turnitin.com for textual similarity review. Information about that will be distributed
and discussed in section by your TA.
Late essays will be penalized 1/3 of a letter grade per day late.
