The University of North Carolina maintains a website, Documenting the American South, which contains an
excellent collection of slave narratives.
Select a slave narrative from this website and write a four- to five-page paper (typed, 12-point font, 1
margins) in which you consider the following questions:

1. How did masters maintain the institution of slavery? What tactics did they
use to enslave other human beings? What effects did these tactics have
on the slaves?

2. What tactics did slaves use to resist their enslavement?

3. How did the authors of slave narratives expose the evils and injustices of
slavery?
