The Uncanny

In Sigmund Freud’s essay, "the Uncanny," ("Das Unheimlich"), we finally have a psychological explanation of why certain things are scary to us. Whether or not we agree with Freud, his account of the uncanny attempts to explain a specific kind of fright that we have come to label as "uncanny" or, in German, "un-homely"("unheimlich"). While some before hime have defined that uncanny as that which resides on the border between two things (e.g. living vs. Inanimate)- much like Julia Kristeva’s concept of "the abject" – Freud argues that things are uncanny if they seem to prove valid either a childhood complex(e.g. that the spirits of he dead are capable of contacting us and punishing us for misdeeds, or that toys are really alive).

After reading "The Uncanny" (pg 181-195)from the attach file
Pick one of the monster from the attach file : "Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (pg 81-96), "Dracula" (pg 115-124), "Serial Killers" (pg 205-210), "Movie Psychos and Slashers" (pg 211-218) and discuss how it supports Freud’s explanation of the uncanny. How would Freud explain your monster as an example of he uncanny .

Produce a thesis- based, thoughtful, well-constructed essay to support your argument. You must also used at least one outside written text from my attach file. Do not simply rely on one quote to give surface acknowledgement but actually discuss the text. Avoid personal experience, focus instead on the ideas of the text, but make sure that you tell us more than retell the text’s ideas. In other words, it is important that a paraphrase of an author’s ideas does not stand in for your own thoughts.

You must incorporate at least one (preferably more) quotation from the material, using proper MLA in-text citation, as well as Works Cited page at the end of the paper.
