The split-brain phenomenon

Theoretical analysis and empirical facts prove the importance of split-brain phenomenon in personal identity. The inner speech strongly linked with personal identity and awareness. For example, patients suffering from the split-brain condition show unequal self-identity and awareness that is complete on the hemisphere of the left side and an incomplete one on the hemisphere of the right side. There have been some varied debate and views on this subject. Many have opinions that it is the left hemisphere that is aware of itself. Another view is that also the normal brain possesses double personal identity and consciousness (Tulving 55).

The hemisphere in the cerebral has a personal identity and is aware of its existence and is in a position to recognize, analyzing and keeping information on its immediate personal familiarity. Personal identity is in this case referring to reflective awareness and second-order awareness. One may imply that the right hemisphere lacks personal identity because it has no linguistic capabilities and is not fully self-aware. However, personal identity can exist in the absence of language. The language cannot be taken as a condition to assess personal identity. The right hemisphere of the split brain is not necessarily a show of self-awareness and personal identity. However, some routes can lead to personal identity because they are not based only on linguistic capabilities (Tulving 70).

The split-brain phenomenon; the right hemisphere is indeed told us a lot about personal identity. The main basis is because to identify oneself one needs to identify who one is and aware of oneself. Both the right and left hemisphere are important in recognizing the personal identity. However, the left hemisphere is more predominant because of it linguistic capabilities.

An example of the split-brain theory arises when an individual is given two separate pictures of a chicken and snow. The patient is then asked to associate the pictures with a list of words. It is evident that the patient would choose a chicken foot and relate it to the chicken and the shovel to relate it to snow. However, when asked about the reason for the choice of a shovel, the reply would only relate to the chicken. For instance, the patient would answer that the shovel is used for cleaning the chicken hutch (Tulving 93).
