The Rural
Part 1:
Look through some magazines and newspapers and collect as many cuttings as you can that feature disputes over the meanings or use of rural space in New Zealand or overseas. If you find magazine and newspaper articles/images online print hard copies. From this collection choose what you consider to be the THREE most interesting.
Part 2:
Having chosen three magazine and newspaper cuttings you now need to write a commentary that explains what the disputes are about and who the protagonists are. In each case analyze how the journalists and those quoted in the stories mobilize different discourses about nature’ to make their case.
To help you write your commentary you could begin by looking at Michael Wood’s book Rural which is on course reserve. Be sure to also read carefully your textbook Social Geographies Chapter 8, which focuses on the rural’. that explore rural space, the countryside, and nature. For example, see work by Jo Little, PaulCloke, Sarah Whatmore, T Mordue, Martin Phillips, Chris Philo, Chris Wilbert and Jennifer Wolch. Academic journals also provide a wealth of material journals you may wish to review include Journal of Rural Studies; Gender, Place and Culture; Social and Cultural Geography, Environment and Planning D: Society and Space; Antipode; and Progress in Human Geography.
While it is not essential, you might like to cite the work of some of these authors in your commentary. If you do, remember to;
¢ Submit three magazine and/or newspaper cuttings that feature disputes over the meanings or use of rural space or the countryside;
¢ Provide a critical analysis of the three magazine and/or newspaper articles;
¢ Demonstrate an understanding of representations of rural space;
¢ Demonstrate an understanding of some of the discourses surrounding nature’;
¢ Demonstrate ability to write clearly, proof-read work and present clean’ copy
