The Island (2005) PG-13

The movie ‘The Island’ played for 136 minutes. Itwas divided into two halves. It was directed by Michael Bay and the produced byMichael Bay, Ian Bryce and Walter Parkes. It was predicted into the year 2019, where Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta lived in a remote compound with other members of the community. Their community was controlled by severe laid out rules, and they believed that the outside world was so contaminated that it had become unfit for human beings to live. They believed that it was only one island that was not affected by that contamination.

The first half of the movie was acted in a spotlessly clean ultramodern environment and those who lived there woresimilar clothes. The supervisors dressed in black while the citizens wore white identical clothes. Catchphrases and orderswere relayed in big TVs, and everybody gathered before the supervisors twice a day to cast lots. Those who would succeed in the draw would go to the Island that was not polluted. The citizens in the white uniforms were made not to think deeply. They were content to know that their safety was guaranteed in the closed system. However, Lincoln Six Echo was a troublesome character and wanted to know more beyond what they were exposed to. Lincoln got dreams that were not from his past experiences, and Dr. Merrick examinedhim for intellectual activity.

Lincoln found out a moth in the underground rooms and realized that they outside world was not as polluted as it was portrayed. He realized that the citizens were all clones that were similar to their sponsors. He also came to know that those who won the lottery were taken for organ harvesting in most cases, in order to prolong the lives of their sponsors.

In the second half, Lincoln and Jordan, who had won the draw, ran away from the enclosed compound. Lincoln Six Echo toldJordan the truth, and they started the journey towards discovering the truth in their world. They were chased after in torrent ways, but they finally managed to discover the hidden truth despite the danger they faced. The movie ended as Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan sailed away in a boat.

The movie is scaring because of the violent fight between the antagonists. I did not like it because of the inhuman act to the clones and the violence in it. The clones’ lives raise pity. They were made ignorant of their surroundings. The ending of the film where Lincoln and Jordan sailed together in a boat shows that nothing can be hidden forever. The ending further indicates that can do everything possible in order to survive.

The virtue ethical theory was portrayed by Lincoln Six Echo, who could be judged by his character of gentleness and politeness before he discovered the truth. Later, he changedto be more violent as he engaged in the search for the truth. Tom Lincoln, his sponsor, is revealedas impolite, insatiable and violent. The deontological theory is portrayed by the citizens who wore white uniforms. They followed what was expected of them by the supervisors without question, because upholding their duties was considered morally correct in their society. They followed this theory since the supervisors were very strict.

I think it is out of ethics creating human beings with a purpose to save another person since everyone has a right to life. It should, therefore, be illegalized to make clones of any form; human beings, animals or other creatures. Clones are not allowed to be themselves or make their decisions, which is an ethical principle that should also apply to them.

If parents are unable to get a child, I would support cloning to assist them get a child from their blood because every parent is proud to hold their child. Adopting a child might not bring fulfillment to such parents. Therefore, cloning could be the only way to fulfill their longing. The truth is that no human being is entitled to live forever, but greed leads some people to extend their lives artificially. They are very comfortable in this world and only think about themselves, since egocentrism rules their lives.
