Directions:
1.    Read the writing topic below carefully and write a well-organized and well-developed essay—with an introduction (a “hook”, a transition, and a thesis statement), several body paragraphs (topic sentences and proper balance between generalizations and details/examples), and a conclusion (final thoughts, suggestions/recommendations and/or questions).  Each body paragraph should include specific examples fromyour experiences and specific details/citations from the book to support your points and to demonstrate you have read and understood the readings.  It is very IMPORTANT that you tie in information from the readings and give depth to your answers. Go beyond surface impressions as you discuss your learning.
2.    Citeat least 3-5 direct short quotes(not full sentences taken whole from text) from the book to support your points but do not use more than 8 quotations(or long quotes) for your entire essay, and do not use outside sources. Include a page number in parentheses for every direct quote (e.g., p. 8 or pp. 27-34).

Anh Do describes several mentors he had throughout his life, including his mom whose sacrifice was an inspiration to him. Have you also had supportive mentors for language and academic literacy in college?  If so, how have these mentors helped you crossboundaries that restricted you in some way?  If not, how have you coped with overcoming boundaries in other ways?
