Purpose

The purpose of this exercise is to help foster more effective communication and collaboration with people with disabilities.

Introduction

The goal of the AXIS Center for Public Awareness of People with Disabilities is to create a positive public awareness of people with disabilities and to strengthen the voices of people with disabilities through advocacy.  AXIS has issued a list of guidelines that offer insight into what to do when communicating with people who have disabilities.

Instructions

Read the Ten Commandments for Communicating with Persons with Disabilities (attached).  In a summary, answer the following questions after reading the commandments :

1. Do you work with people with disabilities? If yes, what has been your experience?
2. Do you follow the commandments when speaking with people with disabilities? How so?
3. Which commandments are most difficult to follow? Why are the commandments so difficult?  How do you overcome these difficulties?
4. Do you have friends with disabilities? If so, what is their advice on effective communication?
