Interview with the Vampire and The Queen of the Damned all present a complicated, bad and disturbing life of a vampire that no sane human being would like to live. Even though Auerbach’s book is an exploration of the history of vampires, which indeed incorporates the other two movies, there is more to grasp from the two chapters as there is in the two movies. I found it interesting that the three pieces of literature have given a lot to cover about the doomed fate, and indeed the complicated life of a vampire. The pieces of literature mock the society’s vampirism by portraying that vampirism does not pay.
Auerbach’s version was a bit interesting because of thedegree of realism applied. In her discussion, the evil nature of the society, as hidden in vampirism, and as portrayed in the two movies of Rice, is exposed. In an attempt to explain the evil nature associated with vampires, she emphatically shows that the features exhibited though vampires are existent in the very society that live in. She even goes ahead to explore the American historical situation of vampirism through human beings. She terms the 1970’s America as a decade of “violent social division and political upheaval” (132). Auerbach also uses the two movies, Queen of the Damned and Interview with the Vampire to expose the evil in the society as it is spread through vampirism. She likens the evils portrayed in the Queen of the Damned with the 1980s America, observing that the movie is “striking and strikingly true of the 1980s” (175). Having watched the movie, and also The Interview with the Vampire, I reiterate that I find it very interesting that the characters who desired vampirism in order to achieve their ideas ended up frustrated, and others were ruined by the vampires.
