Summarizing is integral to good academic writing, but the hard part is knowing how much to summarize. Not too little…not too much.
The definition of summary is a short, general overview of something, in our case, a text. One key to knowing how little or how much is to think about your audience.
How much background information does your reader know?
Tips to summarizing:
Include the main idea
Include key details, but not all details
Include the title of what’s being summarized
Include the author’s name
Writing a Response
A response in academic writing is giving your reaction or opinion to something you read or heard.
Tips to a good response:
Include background information about the material (think really short summary of the topic)
Include your opinion or reaction to the material
Include specific support for your opinion or reaction (Guns in the home are a bad idea because…)
