Discuss why it is important that the public be knowledgeable about science and how it applies to the real world.

Unit II

Oil spills in the ocean are often treated with chemical dispersants. These materials are similar to detergents in that the molecules have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic portions. Based on this, predict what will happen to the components and properties of water when chemical dispersants are used to treat oil spills.

Unit III

There are several instances of people being lost at sea for weeks. If you were in that situation, you would be very dehydrated. Would it be okay to drink a little sea water to quench your thirst? Using what you learned in this unit, explain your answer.

Unit VI

In science, success is often determined by whether or not the right organism is used for research. What organism did Mendel use to learn more about genetics? Explain why “this” was the perfect organism?
