Solution-Discuss biotransformation of the chemical

1) BACKGROUND of the chemical (uses of this chemical, occurrence [natural or man-made], safe vs danger-level exposure concentrations, acute or chronic toxicity, etc)

2) Does this chemical bioaccumulate? if so, why? If not, why not? Also discuss biotransformation of the chemical here…does your toxin undergo biotransformation?

3) Effects on local wildlife, with a specific documented example of harmful exposure with this toxin. Document how clean-up would occur (if it could) and where storage of the toxin would happen…for how long…then what would be done with it?

Conclude with numerical figures on yearly generation of this substance (what amount is made or generated whether naturally or by man-made process), and how is disposed of yearly.

Pick an environmental toxin that is not too simple or common as this would limit your ability to answer the questions above.

Dioxins belong to a group of compounds that are environmental pollutants and found all over the world. They are known to be incorporated in biological food chains and in the fat filled tissues of the body. Dioxins are known to enter the body through fish, meat and other animal products. They are extremely toxic compounds and are known to impair reproduction and cause developmental disorders. They also affect the immunity of the body and cause hormonal imbalance leading to deadly diseases such as cancer. Dioxins are present all around us and hence a back ground exposure to dioxins does not affect the health of a person. Since dioxins have high toxic potential the back ground exposure should also be reduced. Measures to reduce the amount of dioxins are direscted at the very source of this pollutant

Dioxin is a persistent organic pollutant (POP) belonging to the class of a list of dangerous pollutants called dirty dozen. They have high potential for toxicity and are known to affect several parts of the body and organ systems. They are retained within the body once they are exposed to it since the fatty tissues of the body have high absorbance with the dioxins having a half life of about 10 years which is quite high. Its accumulation in the food chain is proportional to the location of the animal in the food chain, the higher that animal, the higher the dioxin content. Chemically dioxin is 2,3,7,8- chlorofluorocarbon para dioxin (TCDD). Poly chlorinated bedizen para dioxins (PCDDs) and poly chlorinated discouragements (PCDFs encompass a group of compounds collectively called dioxins. There are about 419 dioxins in which only as few as 40 have high toxicity. The most toxic dioxin is TCDD.
