A.“The review of the literature provides the background and context for the research problem. It should establish the need for the research and indicate that the writer is knowledgeable about the area” (Wiersma, 1995, p. 406).

B.The literature review accomplishes several important things.

1. It shares with the reader the results of other studies that are closely related to the topic being discussed.

2. It relates a study to the larger, ongoing dialogue in the literature about a topic, filling in gaps and extending prior studies (Marshall & Rossman, 1989).

3. It provides a framework for establishing the importance of the topic, as well as a benchmark for comparing the results of a study with other findings.

4. It “frames” the problem earlier identified.

C. Demonstrate to the reader that you have a comprehensive grasp of the field and are aware of important findings about the topic

D. The literature selected should be pertinent and relevant (APA, 2001). Select and reference only the more appropriate articles. Make key points clearly and succinctly.

E. The Literature review for this class should only contain Journal Articles (may use databases such as Academic Search Premier or JStor) or Websites ending in .gov or .edu

You must choose a SOCIOLOGICAL topic.
7 pages teaching me about your topic. In this section you are going to tell me what other researchers have said about your topic. This should be an unbiased reporting of previous research that was done by others on your topic or on similar topics. There is no opinion in this paper. You must use empirical/scholarly research (journal articles) and explain to me in a discussion format what the researchers have said about your topic. Use appropriate quotes from the research to back up your discussion and cite these appropriately. This paper should be chock full of quotes, quotes of more than a couple of sentences should be indented and single spaced. Quotes that are more than a half page in length, charts, graphs, photos and anything else that takes up a great deal of space should be labeled and moved to the appendices.

Not every research project has been done, you might have something really original and if so you are going to have to find research on other topics that seem related to yours to make it fit and then explain how this other information relates to your topic in a way that makes it similar to what you are researching.

This section is going to be chock full of quotes and each quote should be cited appropriately using ASA, APA, or Chicago Manual style citations. I do get fairly cranky about things that are not cited. If you interview your grandmother that needs to be cited as “interview with grandmother and the date”. DO NOT cite the database, cite the article itself as if you went to the library and got it from a journal. This is important you you will be severely penalized if you cite the database.

Most of my students have found that this is hard to write and make it flow well. This is the most important part of your paper. Do not use any first person pronouns in this section.

Your literature review should not be a persuasive paper. You are not trying to convince me of anything but you are trying to educate me about your topic. This education should reference Scholarly Articles and trusted data about your topic.

You should have at minimum 5 scholarly sources and these should be properly cited in a format of your choosing. (APA, ASA, MLA, Chicago Manual)

You may use non-scholarly sources to back up your discussion but they may not be the foundation of your paper.

The literature review should be a minimum of 7 pages of text, not including cover page, reference page or any appendices.

All pages should be numbered.
