Is there any significant difference between a disagreement that you might have with someone about whether smooth jazz is good music, and one about whether a life that is self-centered and materialistic is a good life? If so, what makes them different? If not, what makes them so similar?

Skepticism about Objective Truth in Morality

There is a significant difference in my response to a person who holds that smooth jazz is a good music and that a self-centered or materialistic life is good.The judgment about whether smooth jazz is a good music will originate from my interest in music.Since I like listening to smooth jazz, I will insist that it is a good music according to my perception.On the other hand, materialistic or self-centered life is not good according to my judgment. It is a life that leads to development of selfish motives which makes a person to act without considering the impact of his or her actions on other people.I consider a good life to be the one that enables a person to live harmoniously with the environment and its provisions.This aspect means that the people we interact with are responsible in determining whether we will have a good life or not. For instance, if one makes considerate decisions regarding their impact on other people,there would be minimal misunderstandings in the society hence enabling people to have good lives.

The judgment on whether smooth jazz and a materialistic life are good will differ by the fact they have different impacts on third parties.When people choose to live a materialistic or self-centered life, the impact of their decision will be felt by other people who depend on them for help. However, the judgment about whether smooth jazz is good music has no severe impacts on the third parties compared to the one concerning a self-centered life.Different people find satisfaction in varied things; therefore, if I find satisfaction in listening to smooth Jazz, I will consider it as being good. My decision will not haveany negative impacts on other people as long as I do not force them to accept that it is right.

The problems you address here are in the implications of the actions that may come from peoples actions, not necessarily from a disagreement itself. People may have differeing views of opinion but depending on their actions these ways of thought can have little to  no effect on others. Simply having an idea and choosing to follow through with it. People will tend to consider the negative implications of their actions and thoughts. By doing so they are able to decide what is best for them. Even if they may agree with a certain ideology or opinion, if they choose not to act on it then does it truly have more weight?
