Saints of silk road
Order Description
C-103, Saints of the Silk Road: writing project (due Monday, April 20)
As outlined in class on March 11, the basic assignment for the final writing project is
(1) to choose a book or a set of articles from the “Supplementary Bibliography” posted
on Oncourse, (2) to read the book or articles, and (3) to write a 6-8 page report or
‘response’ to the readings selected.
You may select another book, or compile another list of articles, not found in the
Supplementary Bibliography, and write your report on the work(s) you select, but your
selection must be approved (before submitting your paper) by the instructor or AI.
If you choose a book, your paper should briefly state the basic argument of the book, note
its structure or give a brief outline of its contents, and give an idea of what kinds of
sources the author uses in presenting his/her argument.
If you choose a set of articles, you should do the same (briefly) for each article.
In both cases, your paper should also discuss how the book or articles are related to the
issues addressed in class.
Otherwise, you are free to identify and discuss any issue you find of interest in the
reading selection you choose, with the aim of producing a coherent and connected paper
that includes the basic elements expected of all writing assignments (i.e., a thesis
statement, appropriate structure, proper grammar and spelling, etc.).
Your paper should be submitted in printed form, in class on Monday, April 20; papers
cannot be accepted after this time. The suggested page range (6-8) assumes doublespaced
text in 12-point font with one-inch margins; the word-count should not exceed
2500.
