RESEARCH PAPER SOMALIA CIVIL WAR & US INTERVENTION & POST COLONIALISM

RESEARCH PAPER:
You will be responsible for writing a substantial (3,000-4,500 word) research paper in the form of a case study of a postcolonial intervention

(military, humanitarian, financial, or cultural) in the 20th or 21st century. Theoretically (per the course perspective), such cases of intervention

instantiate international or global order/hierarchy through impositions of hegemonic or dominant political and economic interests. However, such

interventions are also often shaped or determined over time by the way they call forth counter-hegemonic or resistant identities and actions that

arise in response to those impositions. This paper will be due on Wednesday, March 18, no later than noon. There are a number of stages in the

production of this paper:

(1)Narrow your research topic by focusing on a manageable case or a set of related events. It is also possible to narrow your research topic by

making it conceptually more focused. See chapters one and two of Turabian for help. Narrowed research topics are to be turned in by the beginning of

class on January 14.
(2)Gather sources for your paper and choose ten quality sources to annotate. Quality sources include books published by academic presses and

substantial articles published by peer-reviewed journals. Read these sources carefully and complete the attached template for each of them. See

chapters three and four of Turabian for help on finding and reading sources. See chapters fifteen, eighteen, and nineteen of Turabian for assistance

with proper citation. This assignment is to be turned in by the beginning of class on February 4. This assignment will count for 20% of your final

grade.
(3)After you have read your sources and completed the templates, think about the argument you want to make in your research paper. What is your main

point, and why do you think its true? Craft a concise (250 word) explanation of your main argument and turn it in by the beginning of class on

February 11. See chapter five of Turabian for help. This assignment will count for 10% of your final grade.
(4)Next you need to think about your argument, about opposing arguments, and how to present your argument. This should help you generate an outline

of your paper. Someone who reads this outline should be able to figure out how you plan to develop and present your argument. See chapter 6 of

Turabian for help. Turn the outline in by the beginning of class on February 18. This assignment will count for 10% of your final grade.
(5)Once you have completed your research and have an outline of your paper, its time to begin writing. A draft of your paper is due on March 4. This

is not to be a rough draft. It should be complete, grammatically correct, and formatted in proper academic style. See chapter 7 and the appendix of

Turabian for help. Turn the draft in by the beginning of class. This assignment will count for 10% of your final grade.
(6)Good writers always revise, and so will you. I will return your paper to you with comments on March 9. The final version of your paper is due by

noon, March 18. See chapters nine through twelve and twenty through twenty-six of Turabian for help. This assignment will count for 20% of your final

grade.
