research in business project proposal Academic Essay

1.1 Background

Employee turnover is an essential element of the human resource in any organization and it entails the process of replacing an employee with a new one (Trip, n.d.). The factors that may lead to employee replacement are death, resignation, retirement, and termination. However, for the sake of this project, the operational definition of employee turnover is the act of resignation of an employee in such a way that an employee moves from one organization to the other (Tett & Meyer, 1993’ Morrell, Loan-Clarke & Wilkinson, 2001). This is also known as voluntary turnover whereby an employee moves to another organization with better opportunities or when they face staff conflicts at their current workplaces (Lee, Gerhart, Weller & Trevor, 2008).
1.2 Problem Statement

The main research problem is that employee turnover leads to negative impacts such as loss of productivity and incurrence of costs by an organization. Many employees turnover from one organization to the other, and this is a major problem that faces medium-sized organizations across the globe. Businesses are aimed at making profits by minimizing costs; however, turnover is a deterioration factor. Therefore, it is necessary to solve the problem by establishing the causes of turnover and what can be done to mitigate the problem in medium-sized businesses.
1.3 Research Objectives

To investigate the rate of employee turnover in medium-sized businesses
To establish the factors that cause employee turnover
To evaluate the main impacts of turnover on a business
To determine the most appropriate measures of curbing employee turnover

1.4 Research Questions

What factors contribute to employee turnover?
What are the main impacts of turnover on a business?
What are the most appropriate measures of curbing employee turnover?

Both qualitative and quantitative approaches would be used in this research to fulfil the aims and objectives in addition to answering the research questions. The following are the methodologies to be undertaken.
2.1 Data Collection Methods

Both primary and secondary data sources would be considered in this study. Primary data would be collected from a sample of participants from the selected businesses. Interview and survey questionnaire techniques would be used to collect data from the participants. Items from the questions would be developed for the survey (Gillham, 2008; Munn & Drever, 2004).

The secondary data would be collected through systematic literature review from the literature of the previous studies and business performance data as postulated in Silva, V., Grande, Carvalho, Martimbianco and Riera (2014).
