For this assignment, you will be analyzing The parthenon in terms of its style, ornamentation, iconography, and circulation. Work to address most of the following:
How would people have moved in and around your building/site (circulation) to reveal these systems of meaning?
Analysis of Style
What architectural movement or style can the building be categorized under?
How did approaches to style affect the design of the building?
What elements of that style are present (structures, ornament, orders, forms)?
How did the design manipulate style choices about light, materials, scale, and ornament?
How did the building’s style imitate or differ from similar buildings at the time?
How did the architect or artists create their own unique style at the site?
How was the style/ornament affected by artistic or philosophical ideas or movements?
How did the style respond to the cultural ideas or values of the time?
Analysis of Ornamentation
Describe the type of ornament present in the site (decorative, narrative, symbolic)?
What materials and techniques are used to make the ornament (e.g., carving, murals)?
Where is ornamentation located, and how does it respond to the use of space?
How does the ornamentation reflect the artistic or architectural styles of the time?
Analysis of Iconography
What does iconography mean in the context of your building/site?
How did the culture or religion deploy or avoid iconography in their art?
What kind of religious or political iconography is present at the site?
Did the ornamentation have a symbolic meaning or tell a story? If so, what?
How did the symbolism and narratives of the ornament relate to the building’s use?
How did the ornament reflect the values or ideas of the patron, architect, or society?
Start by finding the images of the ornamentation and iconography for your site. Include an exterior elevation drawing and several detail drawings or photographs.
