Topic: Reflective letter
Order Description
This is a reflective letter to our professor regarding what we have learned throughout the course. Use first person point of view.
The purpose of the reflective letter to your Process Portfolio is to help your instructor understand what you’ve learned and how you’ve developed as a writer and critical thinker over the course of the semester. According to Peter Elbow, “Portfolios give us a way to get students to look back over all their work for the course and reflect carefully on what they have learned—and even to analyze their learning process. For the most important piece in a portfolio is the reflective essay on the contents of the portfolio.”
Your reflective letter should focus on three main areas: self-knowledge, writing knowledge, and critical knowledge. Self-knowledge is your perception of how you have developed as a writer this semester. Writing knowledge is what you’ve learned this semester about critical thinking and the process of academic writing. Critical knowledge is your awareness of your strengths and weaknesses as a writer. As you write about these three main areas, consider the following questions in your reflection:
What were your writing and critical thinking abilities at the start of the semester? How have they changed or improved?
What new abilities have you learned this semester?
What have you learned about critical thinking and academic writing this semester?
What do you think are your strengths and weaknesses as a critical thinker and writer?
NOTE:
Support and illustrate your reflective letter with specific details and examples from your portfolio. For example, if you claim that you increased your ability to logically develop and support ideas, describe how and where you did this in the essays in your portfolio. Or, if you claim that you developed critical thinking skills, show how and where in your assignments you used these skills.
The reflective letter is not the place to argue for the grade you think you deserve or to criticize the class or your instructor. Focus on your development as a writer and critical thinker over the course of the semester.
