Description
Reflective journaling integrates theoretical learning and real-world practice to better prepare the learner for future challenges.
– Set the scene
Describe the experience. Answer: Who? What? When? Where? Why?
– What happened?
Recount the actions that you (and/or your team) took that led to the outcome. What are your feelings in relation to your strengths, capacities, fears, weaknesses, and biases? Was there a knowledge gap? – Did you face a bad habit?
– Think it through
Identified opportunities for improvement, additional questions to ask, or need for a deeper understanding of an issue
– Reflect
Suggest alternative actions you might take next time, and how they would improve the situation. Consider scholarly resources (e.g. literature, mentor, peer groups, etc.).
– Final thoughts
You don’t have to speak directly to your future self, but do consider what advice you hope your future self will remember.
