Reflection on Past Writing Assignments

Learning is both a simple and a complex process depending on the abilities and motivations of the learner. The most vital factor in learning is the ability to think critically and reflect on past lessons. The unit provided The reflection will be done vis-à-vis the requirements of the course, the tutor, and the assignments.

The course instructions stipulate that the students have the responsibility of driving inventions in writing implying that every new and appropriate idea in writing is embraced in this unit. However, this does not imply that the students were given the freedom to go out of the course and assignment specifics. The first assignment named “The Knowledge Front” required the reading of various articles then analysis of these articles. In essence, this paper required critical thinking as opposed to restating what the author put out explicitly. Critical thinking is very important in the learning process and in writing mainly because it enables one to establish purposes while asking important concerning the topic of study. Moreover, critical thinking enables one to make conclusions about a certain article, generate implications, and carry a worldview while utilizing concepts. These statements show how critical thinking was important in this paper.

Reading and writing other author’s notions, suppositions and opinions always presents a challenge mainly because several texts possess implicit as well as an explicit messages. The main challenge comes when one has to read and depict the implicit message in that particular article. My article “Yoga for Depressed Adults” it is clear that the concept of yoga is new to almost all youth including me. Getting the concept of yoga was very hard at first because the description of the concept was lost to me. In addition, the use of yoga by adults seemed like a strange idea because the exercise for old people are normally laid-back and does not involve too much stretching. This is the first instance where this assignment was different for me.

Secondly, synthesis of several articles and combining them into one article that can be read and understood presented a challenge. This is because it needed critical thinking, a concept that I have just heard of but not put in practice. Secondly, integration of ideas from one article to the next became a challenge mainly because the authors utilize different phrases. The fact that my article was about a healthy problem meant that I had to use medical terms such as Estrogen and depression. This implied that I had to learn the meaning of these phrases so that I could deliver a meaningful paper.

Writing is always enjoyable especially when one has a full comprehension of the topic as well as its implications. However, complications arise when the topic at hand is strange to the writer, which was the case for me in this assignment. However, this assignment provided me with a challenge that improved my critical thinking abilities. This assignment was very important for my writing skills because I was able to combine several readings into one text that was readable and understandable to the readers.

Writing has its ethical implications in that the consequences of the written text may be bad or good for the readers. Often, it is advisable to provide truthful and accurate information especially in cases where the effect of the text is tremendous on human lives. The first assignment about the application of yoga in ridding old people of stress has several social consequences implying that the information in it should be accurate and truthful to avoid any ethical issues. The challenge arose when finding the articles to use in writing this assignment. The internet is full of unproven articles that seem like valid documents. The problem is that their validity cannot be estimated. However, I managed to go through this obstacle by using trusted websites and the library to find genuine articles.

I have written essays using my words and the knowledge I possess in various fields. Additionally, I have analyzed article one at a time but not used several in one paper. The assignments were a new thing to me altogether, but I am happy it has enhanced my writing skills. In brief, writing this assignment presented several opportunities for me to learn new tricks in the art of writing. The most notable element of knowledge from the assignment was critical thinking, which enabled me to synthesize various literature and put them into one paper. My knowledge in the use of the internet enabled me to find proper articles for use in the assignment.

The concept of reporting presented itself in the assignments, as the information from the articles had to be presented in the assignments. However, the most notable element in this type of reporting is the use of my words in the final paper of my assignment. This is a different aspect of reporting where it is a requirement to use the same words as the original document. This paper did away with the myth that there is a certain format of reporting, as most of the words in the paper are my words. Additionally, the myth that writing is a complex feat disappeared during the writing process as the words began flowing during the process.
