The Younger’s family is a family that has been living in poverty. Walter is focusing on becoming rich by starting a liquor store, his sister Beneatha wants school fees so that she can complete her studies and become a doctor. The only money that they are expecting to accomplish these goals is a ten dollar check that their mother is expecting as insurance. After the money is home at last, Beneatha is unable to stand with her principles and agrees the choice of letting his brother take the money to start the liquor store. This choice is kind of foolish since early in the play we find that Walter had tried so many other things that would generate money but they all failed. It is not guaranteed that when Beneatha sacrifices her school fees, the business would be successful. In case of a failure of the business then the whole family plus Beneatha’s education and dream all go down.
The family bought a house in a location that only white people lived there. The freedom of the black people was very limited due to racism. The play not only shows the actual lives of the black people but also the slave mentality of the white people on the black people. The message that Hansberry conveys in this play is the fight against racism. By deleting the part where the Young’s family seats in the house armed and waiting for the white people to attack, would not convey the intended message. Racial issues as addressed in the play still exist in modern times. Hansberry not only addresses the issues of racism but still in her play she writes on the issues of domestic violence. In her play she aimed at fighting racism and domestic violence in America.
