Question about viable count

Question about viable count

Question: Is a viable count really reflective of the number of bacteria in the environment you sampled? For example, if you grow bacteria in different dilution factors on a agar plate, from which you sampled from a kitchen sink, would it reflect the amount of bacteria in the sink? One thing i considered is that the agar has nutrients for the bacteria to grow that the sink doesnt but i would like to hear all your opinions!
