ASSIGMENT #1

ABC Manufacturing has 6 machines that perform a particular task. Breakdowns occur frequently for this machine. Past records indicate that the number of breakdowns that occur each day is described by the probability distribution seen below:

(a) What is the expected number of breakdowns in any given day?
(b) What is the variance for this distribution?
(c) What is the probability that there will be at least 2 breakdowns in a day?

Unit IV Case Study
Read the Case Study on page 300 of the textbook on “Mexicana Wire Works.” Thoroughly answer the three associated Discussion Questions using appropriate citation and clearly delineated tables and graphs when necessary. The Discussion Questions are provided on page 301.

Read the Case Study on page 339 of the textbook on the “Chase Manhattan Bank.” Thoroughly answer the three associated Discussion Questions on page 339 using appropriate citation and clearly delineated tables and graphs when necessary.
Both case studies should be answered in a minimum three- to four-page paper using appropriate APA style.

Unit V
A package express carrier is considering expanding the fleet of aircraft used to transport packages. Of primary importance is that there is a total of $350 million allocated for purchases. Two types of aircraft may be purchased – the C1A and the C1B. The C1A costs $25 million, while the C1B costs $18 million. The C1A can carry 60,000 pounds of packages, while the C1B can only carry 40,000 pounds of packages. Of secondary importance is that the company needs at least 10 new aircraft. It takes 150 hours per month to maintain the C1A, and 100 hours to maintain the C1B. The least level of importance is that there are a total of 1,200 hours of maintenance time available per month.

Part 1: Formulate this as an integer programming problem to maximize the number of pounds that may be carried.

Part 2: Rework the problem differently than in Part 1 to suppose the company decides that what is most important to them is that they keep the ratio of C1Bs to C1As in their fleet as close to 1.2 as possible to allow for flexibility in serving their routes. Formulate the goal programming representation of this problem, with the other three goals having priorities P2, P3, and P4, respectively.

Read the case study on page 494 of the textbook entitled “Family Planning Research Center of Nigeria.” As you read the Case Study, take notes on how the concepts of Project Management can lead you to develop effective solutions to the three Associated Discussion questions located on page 496.

You are to answer TWO of the three case studies in a minimum three- to four-page paper. Use any tables, graphs, or charts that you deem necessary to support your response. Use appropriate APA style to cite any outside sources.

For this assignment you are to write a culminating quantitative research report on the concepts and topics that you learned in this course. For this paper, you need to critique two or more research papers/journals that use quantitative research methods for business.

Your paper needs to include the following items:
1. Abstract
2. Scale of Data Measurement

Was it quantitative or qualitative? How did the researcher go about collecting the data?
3. Variations within the data

Include the implications this may have for business methods.

4. Concluding results
Critique the findings. What type of errors occurred in the research that may affect the outcome of the data? Is there any missing information that should be included? Discuss how you would approach the research and what type of questions you may ask.
Your research report should be a minimum of eight pages with appropriate APA style and citation.
