Take a few minutes to think about why you are furthering your education.

List all the reasons on a sheet of paper.

Next to each reason, list all the theories of motivation that the reason would fit into

(instinct, drive reduction, incentives, optimal arousal, and/or Maslow’s hierarchy of

needs). For Maslow’s
hierarchy of needs, list the specific need that your reason satisfies.

Part 2
Answer the following questions:

1. Dr. Smith is conducting a study on work satisfaction and salary. She surveys 100

employees at a large company and asks them to list their salary and rate their work

satisfaction.

a. Is this an experiment or correlation?

b. Does this study answer the question “Does salary cause work satisfaction?”

2. Dr. Jones is conducting a study on employee satisfaction to different management styles.
He randomly assigns 50 PSY 101 students to a task with a “manager” using an authoritarian

style and 50 PSY 101 students to a task with a “manager” using democratic style. The

students work in groups of 3 under the “manager” on a task. After the task, each student is

asked about their satisfaction with the task and their satisfaction
with the “manager.”
