psychology and gender

Where Should You Go?: Read chapter 3 in the textbook. Then visit the louvre

What Should You Observe?: Spend time in the louvre in paris. Get a map of the museum and the exhibits on display. You can choose to go directly to rooms of your interest or wonder around and see what interesting things you stumble upon. Using chapter 3 as your primary inspiration (although you are also welcome to use chapter 2), reflect upon what the artwork/sculptures/exhibit pieces/photographs reveal about how gender is or was performed within and across cultures. In what ways is this the same and/or different from your observations of gender where you live (in your own culture)? Also don’t forget to notice the museum itself and the ways people interact within it. Does it reveal anything to you about gender performances within the context of museums?

What Should You Write About?: Write a 2 page essay on what you observed at the museum. First describe what museum you decided to visit, why this appealed to you, and the types of artwork/exhibits that most drew your attention. Second, choose at least one artwork/sculpture/exhibit piece/photograph that can help you exemplify some of the major points in chapter 3. Describe in detail how the piece or pieces of art you chose are linked with some of these ideas. You may also, if it applies, draw inspiration and make links to chapter 2. Finally, in the last paragraph, describe what interesting questions or ideas popped up for you regarding gender during your time at the museum?

Note: You may choose to visit the museum with a group from class. You are welcome to discuss what you observed with your travel partners. You can even write about the discussion you and your classmates had about gender as it related to what was observed at the museum. However, you must write separately using your own ideas.

What Should You Hand In?: Hand in a two page essay WITH your museum ticket stapled to it. You will lose two letter grades if you do not include proof of visit to the museum.

As usual, you should hand in a 2 page, stapled essay that is electronically written using double spacing and 12 point font. Place your name and what assignment this is (Gender Quest #2) at the top of the page. Remember to check your spelling and grammar. DO NOT use quotes from your textbook or other sources without properly referring to the author(s) using APA formatting (for example: Kimmel, 2012, p. 5). Make sure that your essay is written with paragraphs (as opposed to one long paragraph) and in a way that I will be able to easily understand your ideas. For safety measures you may send me an electronic version of this paper over email. However, for full credit, I will expect you to print out your essay and hand it to me in class on the due date. Your grade will be lowered by 1/3 (e.g. C to C-) each day it is late.
