Details: Provide a description and analysis of a culture landscape in BC’s Lower Mainland as follows. (1) Describe your chosen landscape by means of text and some visual format. (2) Give some sense of how this place has come to be as it is. (3) Since landscapes are reflections of culture, show how your landscape reflects the values/tastes/aspirations/etc of the people associated with it (or those of society at large). Your landscape should be of very modest size, easily crossed on foot in a few minutes. Avoid the large or exotic – Steveston or Gastown or the Sun Yat-Sen Garden – in favor of the small and ordinary – a modest shopping plaza or a small cluster of townhouses down the street. Avoid your own home! Remember: landscape, as the term suggests, involves a piece of land, part of the earth’s surface. There may well be buildings on it, but a building per se is not a landscape. Moreover, while the function of a building might be important to your essay, its internal character – layout – is rarely relevant. Stay on the outside. Look long and hard at your landscape – on more than one occasion. One purpose of this essay is to encourage you to observe and think about some place you might normally take for granted, to use your eyes (and occasionally other senses?) and your head. All the same, you must try to provide supportive documentation for the later portions of your essay. Keep in mind that, in the last part, such documentation may be “generic” rather than specific to your chosen locale (e.g. research on shopping strips in general rather than on the specific example your have chosen). As for the non-verbal imagery in your description, it should preferably be of your own making – maps? photographs? sketching? Referencing: (I think number of references is not required) You must acknowledge the sources of any data and illustrative material used; as well as all ideas you benefited from (whether quoted or turned int your own words). Moreover, you must acknowledge any help received with language or presentation. References inserted into the text (e.g., Lee 1984, p.33); complete bibliography at end. For this essay, give page numbers every time you reference a source; or state if your source is unpaginated. Please remember: the cultural landscape must be somewhere close to Vancouver, BC, Canada, and small in size.. Thank you very much.
