PROPHETIC CONFRONTATION EXERCISE Academic Essay

5.4 UA-PERSONAL REACTION TO PROPHETIC CONFRONTATION EXERCISE
UNIT FIVE INTRODUCTION
This week’s focus is on prophetic confrontation. Perhaps it might be helpful to define what we mean by this phrase.

Prophetic has to do with the role or office of the prophet, whether OT or NT. This is the person who gets a word from God, and then is sent to speak that word, whether to a person, or a people. Prophets were involved in foretelling – giving messages from God that were predictive or futuristic in nature. They were also involved in forthtelling – giving messages from God which dealt with the present moral condition of humanity.

Confrontation in this application has to do with the one bringing to the attention of another something that the person is doing that is outside God’s instruction or plan for their life.

Thus, prophetic confrontation is the act of someone receiving a word from God, either from Him directly or from His Word, and then taking that message to a specific audience. Quite often (though not always), that message has to do with the confrontation of sin.

Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:
? Examine the outcomes of prophetic confrontation.

RESOURCES
? Textbook: The Art and Craft of Biblical Preaching
? Media Clip: “A Call to Anguish” sermon by David Wilkerson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPPmpGFF5jE
? Your Bible

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This reading challenges you to speak to your culture in such a way that the message you speak with challenge the ideas, concepts, behavior and values of the world in which you live. Understand that speaking this message will take moral courage, and will come at a cost. Some preachers today are not willing to pay that cost, or may simply not believe in prophetic confrontation- they do not see it as their role. However, any balanced reading of OT or NT scripture will reveal that this type of preaching is at times mandated by God Himself. If we are to be faithful to His message, we must give His message, however unpopular.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Read the textbook, chapters- 23, 39, 52, 67, 103, 126, 149, 178, and 179.
2. View the Media Clip: “A Call to Anguish” sermon by David Wilkerson. As you listen, take notes on those statements that Wilkerson makes that you believe will impact his audience, whether for good or for ill for use in the coming threaded discussions.

5.4 UNIT ASSIGNMENT: PERSONAL REACTION TO PROPHETIC CONFRONTATION EXERCISE INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
We have defined prophetic confrontation, examined some of its outcomes, and also examined how culture might react to this type of preaching. Now, you will take a look at how it impacts you personally. This assignment aligns with the course in that it forces the student to examine his or her own reaction to the kind of prophetic ministry that impacts one’s own life, values, and ministry.

Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:
? Examine your own personal reaction to prophetic confrontation.

RESOURCES

It has been said that the preacher should never be guilty of trafficking in unfelt truth. In other words, one should not espouse a worldview that one does not also personally live by. a. As you watched Wilkerson’s message, how did it personally impact you?
b. In what way(s) were personally convicted by the Holy Spirit about something in your own life, as you listened to the message?
c. What, if anything, did Wilkerson say that offended you?
d. What do you plan to change or alter in your worldview or walk with the Lord as a result of Wilkerson’s message?
