UNIT FOUR INTRODUCTION
In this unit we want critique the ethical use of emotion and intellect in preaching.

For so many, it is either/or – one can either be smart but dispassionate, or pedestrian but passionate. It is the focus of this unit to see that each has their place in effective Gospel communication – in fact, each is necessary if one is to truly be effective in the ministry of the Word.

Upon completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Identify an effective model of intellect in preaching.
2. Identify an effective model of emotion in preaching.
3. Examine one’s own bias toward either intellect or emotion in preaching.

INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
At various points in the book, our course text draws attention to both intellect/content, and emotion/delivery. To have great content without effective delivery leaves the audience dry and dispassionate. To have great delivery without substantive content leaves the audience with much energy but little direction. Again, in this unit, the goal is to see the benefit of the balance of these two aspects.

Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Again, the goal of this assignment is to look at the twin peaks of intellect and emotion through the lens of our text. Various authors, all of whom have made their mark in the discipline of preaching, have much to say about these two issues.

1.Read/reread the following chapters in the course textbook – 18, 22, 27, 35, 52, 53, 62, 64, 69, 84, 104, 109, 111, 125, 127, 130-135, and 166-168.

This assignment is designed to lead you into crafting your own philosophy of how you will ethically marry both intellect and emotion in your preaching. This assignment aligns with the course in that it forces the student to think deeply about how he/she will model each of these facets of effective Gospel communication appropriately.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
You began this unit by reading the thought of several authors in your course text. You and your fellow students then moved to an examination of the Web and print material modeling both effective content (intellect) and effective delivery (emotion). Thirdly, you did some honest reflection regarding our own bias.
By now you have hopefully come to the conclusion that it is not an either/or proposition, but both/and. Good preaching is not:
Intellect vs emotion
Head vs heart
Content vs delivery
Thinking vs feeling

But rather it is all the above – it is solid scholarship delivered in an interesting way that connects the head and the heart of the listener to the message the Holy Spirit intends for the hour. In sum, it is a balance of the two.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. In a 3-4 page Word document, address the following six bullet points, along with any other reflection you feel germane to the subject:
a. Acknowledging your bias, what will you do to bring yourself toward the center point of both intellect and emotion?
b. What checks and balances will you import into your preaching to maintain an equilibrium between these two characteristics above?
c. Who will serve as a biblical role model for this balance between the two?
d. Who will serve as a contemporary role model for this balance between the two?
e. Who will you consult to serve witness to this balance- someone who regularly hears you preach?
f. What role will prayer play in all this?
