Never been to a classical music concert before, it took me some time to come up with the kind of classical music I wanted to hear. This had me travel to the local cinema where they were holding a live performance of “an evening of Schubert, Haydn and Handel.” At the concert, unlike in the modern concerts that I attend, the different characters wore tuxedos, for men while the women in the performance wore black pants and black dresses. A brief description of the music that was to be played was made and I awaited the fine tunes often associated with classical music.
The first to be performed was the Music for the royal fireworks that had the various instrumentalists use aerophones, membranophones as well as chordophones. The wind instruments that were used included the woodwinds and the brass through the bassoon, trumpet ad the French horn overshadowed the tunes from the two. The string instruments that were played included the violin, cello, the viola as well as the double bass. The music had a rhythmic tune through it was often interrupted by the sounds of the trumpet and other loud instruments like the French horn making the soloist inaudible and less entertaining. For this concert, they used the Timpani as their percussion instrument.
The motion in the performance is Brocken down to Quadra-sections; the Adagio, Allegro, the lentement and the tempo. To begin, the Adagio is a section that is made up of slow introductions and is major in the performance as it is set in the quadruple meter. It is made up of an ascending melody and there are cadences that are brief, but growing into a crescendo. The energy that is portrayed in this performance stage is meant to hold the attention of the listener, creating a joyful and musical mood. The allegro begins at the mezzo piano level and is in triple meter. The section is played as a key step and is conjunct in terms of movements. The melody has an ascending tone and sets the mood for the performance, ushering in a crescendo. The first tempo is responsible for the creation of a joyful mood. The lentement section of the performance has a slow and relaxing mood, featuring a decrescendo with a narrow range and in the final section; we have the allegro being repeated.
Symphony No. 8 in B minor was a composition by Schubert during the Romantic era and included such instruments as the tambourine, the flute, bassoon, oboe, as well as the violin, cello and the double bass chordophones. The entire music had a homophonic texture and in genre, could only fall for a symphony. The genre classification is divided into two movements, that is, the Allegro moderato and the con moto. We realize that the Allegro moderato follows the Sonata Allegro form and eventually it grows into a crescendo. At the beginning, it is a conjunct with a narrow range and eventually grows into a wide range. The softness in the opening creates an emotional thrill and encompasses a movement filled with recapitulation since we realize that, there are two main themes that recur throughout the piece.
“Surprise” is one of the symphonys composed by Haydn during the classical era and it is a symphony that is generally made of a homophobic texture just like the rest of his compositions. The piece uses an assortment of instrument, among them; the French horn, the trumpet. the oboe, bassoon, violins, the chordophones, the cello double bass and the membranophones (timpani) among others. The symphony that is brought out in the composition has four movement, which are the Adagio cantabile Vivace Assai, the Andante, menuette and the finale. A slow introduction marks the begging and then a quick tempo is set in play, introducing the allegro. The movement begins from the piano and as it rises, joins the mezopianno and the melodic shape takes the form of a crescendo. We notice two themes in this composition. An air of spontaneity is created and the listener is then left unable to make a prediction of what is next coming. The mood is exciting and the Adante presents a variation theme of the form (A,A1, A2, A3 and A4). The melodies fluctuate from ascending and descending giving chance to the various instruments to flourish and the performers to display the art. A piano begins and a sudden shift happens to forte. Many themes are varied usually played in the pianissimo. The minuet has a dancelike movement creating a happy and cheerful mood. The melodies of the composition begin with a narrow range and then eventually it expands into a wide range. Fewer instruments are then played during the trio than the minuet. The final movement is a duple meter as a major key and it flows with an ascending theme.
In conclusion, the performance is more of an instruments affair and the experts know their instruments well. The performance is also a thrill and has a deep essence into the meaning of music. This is so through portraying the important role that is played by musical instruments in a musical performance.
