MYTHOLOGY OF GREECE & ROME

 
Choose one of the following prompts and write an essay that follows its instructions.

1)

Describe, with evidence from your texts, the heroic values of Achilles, Odysseus, and Jason, and compare them to the heroic values of Aeneas. What do these values tell you about the differences between Greek and Roman ideologies?

Describe, with evidence from your texts, the different values of Penelope and Dido. Do you think Penelope embodies the Greeks? ideal feminine virtues? Why? Does Dido fulfill this role for the Romans? Why (not)? What do these women tell you about the differences between Green and Roman ideologies?

Write a brief conclusion synthesizing your findings about each culture. What do you think caused the values to change, or to stay the same, between these two cultures?

Only the books 5 (Odysseus €“ Nymph and Shipwreck), 19 (Penelope and Her Guest), 22 (Slaughter in the Hall), 23 (The Great Rooted Bed), from Homer The Odyssey translated by Robert Fagles, Introduction and notes by Bernard Knox, and published by Penguin Books.

Only the books 2 (The Fall of Troy), 4 (Dido), 6 (The Underworld), 12 (Truce and Duel) from Virgil, The Aeneid translated and with an introduction by David West, Revised Edition, published by Penguin Books.

You don’t have to include evidences with all the books. When you need evidences, use above books.

Formatting:

2- Include a cover page, with your name, your TA?s name, your section, the assignment (Essay 1, the number of your chosen prompt), and the date. This page does not count toward your 4-5 page requirement!
2- All citations must be in correct format

1- Use 1-inch margins

1- Use 12-pt, Times or Times New Roman font.

1- Use no fewer than 4, no more than 5 pages (if there are more than 5, I won?t read anything past page 5). Don?t include a works cited page; it will not count toward your page requirement anyway.
