Missionaries in China
Order Description
The “God” of “God, Gold, and Glory:” The Role of European Christian missionaries in China from the 16th to the 19th Century: Describe and contrast the effort of the 16th Century Portuguese Jesuits led by Matteo Ricci and others with the work of the European and American missionaries of the 19th Century. One approach was clearly more effective in the context of China; why was this so? What impact did missionaries have on China’s relations with western powers, especially in the 19th Century? In the end, do you think the missionaries accomplished their goals?
