If someone would have asked me what career I would like to choose when I was young, I would say that I would want a career that was less tasking in terms of manual work, but also, involving cognitive skills such as solving mathematical problems. My friends used to say that I was lazy and did not want to “exercise” for improving my body strengths. However, I felt that doing manual jobs was not my area of specialization. As a result, I was rebellious violent but zealous in activities involving thinking. My friends always treated me as odd and I felt that I was different and did not deserve to be with others. Thanks to my parents, I they understood my odd behavior and they helped me understand how to interact with others while managing my small problem. Ball and sock experiment can be used to explain challenges being faced by others and, the problem that I faced when I was young.
Ball and sock experiment is used to describe individuals who are institutionally decriminalized or are considered by the society to have odd behaviors which are against the way a normal society operates. The experiment is used to show the challenges that people have to live with because of being different from the others and as a result of the way they are treated as being awkward. The experiment has been used to understand the experience of left-handed individuals who are perceived to be different; making them to feel sidelined by the society and unappreciated. Research shows that left-handled people may not carry many benefits as the right people and as a result, they feel that they are disproportionately talented. Research shows that 12 percent of people in the world; apparently, many people believe that the odd population may not have benefits to the society. In the business environment, the odd populations are single out because of their odd behavior and decriminalized. There is a big gap between the lefties and right-handled people because the lefties tend to have more emotional and behavioral problems, as well some learning disabilities including dyslexia. They also have low concentration academic setting and less input in occupations requiring less cognitive skills (Hogan, 2010). In a business environment, managers should learn to understand people’s differences and helped then to develop positive attitude.
Lefties in Business Environment
As such, understanding diversity and applying the knowledge at workplace can improve the overall performance of the employees. Some professional err in contemplating that in today’s business world, cultural diversity may not have a significant impact on the business. It is a common mistake to perceive that people think and dress alike; moreover, it is another mistake think that people are the same just because they have the same word choices in the business setting. People’s cultures influence many things in business including the pace of the business, the, communication, decision-making, marketing, management of employees, distribution and the propensity for risk taking. In some countries such as Germany and America, people tend to speak loudly and are assertive when sharing ideas and giving directions. In other countries such as Japan, people typically tend to speak softly and as passive when giving directions and sharing ideas. Such attributes can lead language barrier in a workplace environment. When working with people from different cultural backgrounds and who speak different languages, it can be imperative to speak in a neutral tone; in a conscious effort to be considerate to others (Morrison, 2011).
Furthermore, the levels of conservatism, ideologies and gender views vary across cultures especially when launching marketing campaigns. It is important that one identifies the target group in order introduce campaigns that are in line with the cultural norms and which are not insulting. Being aware of the cultural norms can assist company to target the selected customers. For example, women are in control of decision making in Sweden, while in Japan and Australia, men make the majority of the purchasing decisions (Morrison, 2011).
As a result of globalization, technology has made it possible for people to communicate with each through the video conferencing regardless of the differences in time zone. However, there are few rules that managers should be conscious about when contacting people from different cultures. Due the time zone differences, people have a different approach to the time when they can be available; depending on their cultural differences. There are cultures which people cannot be available during particular days in the middle of a business week; therefore, it cannot be a favorable time conduct business with them. For example, Spanish tend to have long lunch hour break compared to the Americans. It means that one should accommodate two-to-three time period in which the person scheduled for the business meeting is unavailable. Verifying availability prior to making a call can help to interact with people who different cultural norms which affect their availability (Morrison, 2011).
Conclusion
It is possible the lefties are disproportionately disadvantaged in terms of top skills distribution and behavioral patterns. It is also possible that the lefties can reinforce their abilities and get earning equal to those of the righties. The bottom line is that if there is any southpaw gift, it is often visible to only a few people who understand them and help then to be productive in the society. In the business environment, the lefties should not be considered as disadvantaged; rather, they should be appreciated so that they can bring out their rare gifts and skills.
