Introduction
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to lead and manage people
and teams and support and encourage
their commitment to the organisation. It requires the ability to lead
by example and manage team performance through effective leadership.

Instructions
Your lecturer will allocate you to a team of 4
–
6 participants. As a team, you are required to
plan, organise
and present
a proposal for a
team
building activity to be used by different departments within a hotel
. Your
approach to work should be innovative e.g. use of technology to enable improved communication.
In your teams, you will be required to:
1.
Come up with an idea/concept for the
team bu
ilding activity
and write a
Proposal
outlining the
desired outcomes
2.
Identify the
Key Objectives
in the proposal and then develop a
Project Plan
and
Contingency Plans
for the proposed
team building activity
(e.g. GANTT Charts or Excel Spread sheets)

As part of your plans,
allocate roles, tasks and responsibilities
to team members
.
In order
to encourage open and supportive communication within the team,
develop a
model of
communication indicating Norms and Expectations of how the team is going to work.
This
document will form the foundation of open and supportive communication within the
team. This document will need to be agreed upon by all team members and sign
ed off on
e.g. Charter/Terms of Reference
b.
Reflecting upon how you as a team delegated tasks and responsibilities,
report on
what
barriers presented themselves and how you as a team overcame these barriers
.
c.
Identify and outline how you as a team, intend on
motivating, encouraging and rewarding
one anothe
r for efforts and contributions

You will be required to allocate agreed time with your team members during each week in order to
collaborate on this project.
These meetings
are to take place in the allocate
d online space and
are
required to be minuted with action points recorded and submitted as part of this assessment.
Standing agenda items in your team meetings must include “Individual Performance/Skills Gap
Analysis
” and
“Update on current progress”. Your
lecturer will require feedback on what
performance/skills gaps have been identified and how they were addressed. Your lecturer will also
require ongoing updates on the projects progress. This info
rmation will need to be minuted

t an individual reflection paper. Your paper should address the following
topics:

Outline your own leadership style and the other leadership styles used within the team.
b.
Reflecting on your own leadership style, what worked for you, and what didn’t work for
you? Give examples.

Reflecting on the other leadership styles within the team, discuss what characteristics you
believe an effective leader should possess. Give examples of effective and ineffective
leadership from your project.
