LEADERSHIP & INFLUENCE

LEADERSHIP & INFLUENCE

An enthusiastic hard worker skilled in Geology and Petroleum and Environmental Geochemistry seeking a research position offering career opportunities for personal contribution and professional growth utilizing my technical knowledge in the Geological and Environmental Geochemical fields.

Education

Newcastle University, Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental and Petroleum Geochemistry, 2014 – 2015

Courses included: Petroleum in the Environment, Sedimentary Organic Matter, Molecular Marker Compounds, Aqueous Geochemistry, Air Pollution, Research Methods, Environmental Analytical Geochemistry, Introduction to Microbiology and Microbial Transformation of Pollutants, Sources, Fates and control of Pollutants, Contaminated Land, and Geographical Information Systems. The course also included field trips to Northumberland, North Yorkshire and St. Anthony Lead Works in Newcastle where I gained practical experience on water sampling for the determination of pollutants, development of basins, stratigraphy, and remediation of contaminated lands.

Research Project: Paleoenvironmental Implications of Cenozoic Sediments from the Western Pacific (IODP Expedition 351) Using Inorganic Geochemistry.

Supervisor: Dr Cees van der Land

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi State, Nigeria B. Tech (Hons) Applied Geology (2.1), 1998 – 2003

Courses included: Sedimentary Environment and Basin Analysis, Geophysics, Sedimentology, Structural Geology, Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Micropalaeontology, Applied Geophysics, Geochemical Exploration, Stratigraphy, Petroleum Geology, Petrology and Tectonics.

Research Project: Biostratigraphy and Paleoenvironmental implications of the Upper Cretaceous sediments of the Gongila Formation, Upper Benue Trough, Nigeria-case study of Ashaka cement Plc.

Supervisor: Dr Mohammed Abubakar

Mapping Project: In my second year as an undergraduate we planned and carried out a two week long project in Bima and Gongila rock formations in the Bornu Basin, Nigeria. The Fika Shale Formation, which is part of this area, has since been developed further for exploration.

Command Day Secondary School, 1989 – 1994

Senior School Leaving Certificate

Research Interests

Geochemical proxies to reconstruct detrital input, paleo-productivity and paleo-redox conditions of ancient environments and basins.

Determination of the feasibility of bioremediation as a strategy for the clean-up of oil contaminated beach sediments.

Relevant Work Experience

Researcher, Department of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Newcastle University, 2014 – 2015

To trace diagenetic overprint, sediment provenance and paleoenvironmental changes of the Cenozoic sediments from the western Pacific, I was involved in the sampling, sample preparation, sample analysis using Vista-MPX CCD Simultaneous ICP-OES optimized for the analysis of the major elements (Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, P, Ti) and minor and trace elements (As, Ba, Co, Cu, Mo, Ni, V, Zn, Zr) abundances and writing of the project dissertation.

· Basic Accounting & Financial Analysis

· Basic Credit Analysis

· International Trade Operations

· Presentation/Communication Skills/Business Development

Undergraduate, Department of Applied Geology, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, 2002 – 2003

During my final year as an undergraduate, I investigated and carried out detailed paleoenvironmental analysis based on planktonic and benthic foraminifera over the Cenomanian/Turonian transition exposed at Ashaka in northeast Nigeria.

Trainee Analyst, Ashaka Cement Plc, Gombe State, Nigeria, 2001 – 2002

During my one-year training program I gained practical experience in performing chemical and physical analyses of limestone, collating daily reports for quarry operations and calculating reserve estimates of limestone as well as completing courses on leadership, project management and business writing. Once I had completed my Health & Safety course, I was also given the chance to spend time in the quarry, which I enjoyed very much although it was challenging. During my last months at Ashaka Cement, I was a member of a project team where I provided relevant geological data for a new quarry site for drilling.

Field and sampling works undertaken

Newcastle University

Field trip carried out in October, 2014 to the Middle Lias of Staithes, North Yorkshire, Wessex Basin, where I acquired practical knowledge on the basin development, stratigraphy and sedimentology of the Wessex Basin.

Field trip in November, 2014 to Northumberland coal mine in UK. Water samples were collected for further organic and inorganic geochemical analysis of pollutants.

Fieldwork carried out in February, 2015 to St. Anthony’s Lead Works, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Here we were exposed to the various remediation techniques and reclamation of lead contaminated lands.

Further Trainings, December, 2014 – February, 2015

Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry and Chromatography Trainings were done by Thompson Philip at Newcastle University, United Kingdom.

Work-Related Skills

IT I am experienced in using ArcGIS, Sigma Plot, Minitab, ADMS and Gaussian Plume Modelling through my postgraduate Diploma degree and through my work experience. I am also familiar with SPSS, which I used for some of my coursework and I am a highly confident user of most Microsoft applications.

Analytical I have developed these skills further through complex practical and laboratory exercises which form part of my Postgraduate Diploma program. This has included petrological, geochemical, and sedimentological analysis as well as modelling.

Teamwork I have been involved in a variety of successful teams at work, during my studies and through my outside interests. At Ashaka Cement Company, I was a member of several project teams, and made immense contributions towards the success of many projects. I also completed courses in leadership and led teams of up to eight on assigned tasks.

Communication I have developed excellent written communication skills through my academic work. This included a 12,000 word report on my postgraduate dissertation project. I also frequently wrote reports and made presentations on my findings to colleagues and managers at Ashaka Cement. I have learned how to communicate effectively with a wide range of people through my voluntary work at my local church.
