Lab: Porifera, Cnidaria

PHYLUM PORIFERA
1. On the back of the sheet, draw the basic structure of a sponge.  Label the: epithelial cells, porocytes, choanocytes,
spongocoel, amoebocytes, and osculum.  Draw arrows showing the directional movement of water (through pores and
osculum).  Observe the Scypha slide (129-130) €“ which of the above structures can you see?

2. Are sponges heterotrophs?  How do they obtain and process their food?

3.  Observe some of the dried sponges on display.  What structures make up the dense lattice that gives the sponge its shape?

PHYLUM CNIDARIA
Class Hydrozoa
4.  Examine the slide of the budding hydra (5-6).  Make a drawing (on back of sheet) and indicate if budding is an example of
asexual or sexual reproduction?

5. Make a drawing of the hydra cross-section (69-70).  Label the epidermis and the endodermis.

6.  Examine the slides of the Obelia hydroid (23-24) and make a drawing.  Label a gastrozooid and a gonozoid.  What is the
difference between these structures?

7. Examine the slides and make a drawing of the Obelia medusae (25-26), which reproduce sexually.  What is the name of the
larvae produced by cnidarians?

Class Scyphozoa
8.  When you get stung by a jellyfish, you’ve touched a stinging cell called a _______________, which triggers the release of a
poisonous barb called a _________________.

9.  What is the dominant stage of a jellyfish?

Class Anthozoa
10.  The anthozoans include the sea anemones and corals (examine a coral specimen in lab).  What is the hard skeleton of a coral
composed of?  What formed the small depressions found on the surface of the coral.
