1. Think of an example from your own life that followed the mutually transactional model of communication.
a. Using the example you’ve thought of, draw the interaction out using the mutually transactional model of communication. (Make sure to label each element)
b. After you’ve drawn out the interaction, discuss how appropriate the channel of communication was for the message you sent. Explain what makes it appropriate or inappropriate.

On Greet Hofstede’s dimensions of culture scale (listed in your textbook as Cultural Values and Norms), United States ranks 91 on the Individualism scale, meaning we, as a nation, are very focused on ourselves over the community. An example of our individualism could be seen in common proverbs such as, “Pick yourself up by your bootstraps.” However, an Igbo and Yoruba proverb, popularized in the United States by former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, “It takes village to raise a child” emphasizes the community’s role over the individual’s. While you cannot generalize an entire country, these scales are mant to hel up understand the values and beliefs that national cultures hold.
a. Describe an example from your own culture (preferably something from everyday life rather than a proverb, unless used often) that demonstrates one of the other five cultural values and norms listed in your textbook (pp.80-85). Explain.
b. Why is it important to have an understanding of your own cultural values and norms as well as those of others? Explain. (Consider using some of the points made about intercultural communication competence)

3. As listeners, most of us adjust our listener-type based on the different situations we encounter each day.
a. List the four types of listeners and explain an appropriate situation for each type. (Avoid using the same situation twice. (Each type, example and explanation is worth 2points)
b. We?re often guilty of faulty listening. In addition to adjusting your listener-type, what else could you do to improve your own listening? Explain.

4. Public Speaking is an important skill for work, school and civic duties.
a. Your textbook states, ?To be successful, every choice you make in putting together your speech? must be appropriate for both of these components?: audience and occasion. Which would you consider to be MOST important to any speech? Explain.
b. Finish this sentence : Great introductions and conclusions will? (Consider the speaker and audience) Explain your answer.
c. Why are outlines important for creating and delivering speeches? Explain.

5. Communication is a very big part of creating the self. We develop and present our selves in many ways.
a. Why is interaction with others important for our self-concept? What do we call the self concept we hold of ourselves which develops from interactions with others? Explain both.
b. Using an example from your own life, describe a time when you have caught yourself thinking about the way in which you present your self. Describe how you manage this identity and why identity management is important for your self.

6. Explain Communication Competence in your own words. Then describe a time (a single interaction) in which you could have used one of the characteristics of competent communicators to improve communication. Describe exactly how you would have used the characteristic in that situation.

7. Describe a situation in which you may have misinterpreted communication with someone. Use perception checking to show how you could have reviewed the situation to gain a more clear understanding of the other person?s perspective.

8. Describe ethnocentricity. How can you work to be less ethnocentric? Explain

9. What is the difference between listening and hearing? Describe the process of listening

10. How can you manage communication apprehension brought on by public speaking?
